![]() These are 1:1 crops, but you’ll need to click on the image to see it big so you can actually see it at 1:1 Here’s an example of standard Lightroom sharpening, and cleaned up using this method. Of course, this is all very subjective so you may not agree, but anyway, I’m providing all the bits you need to try this, so if you don’t like it, then don’t use it. It may technically be slightly softer on a pure edge level, but I think it’s more film like and natural looking. The way I’ve designed this is to give a more organic look and take the weird painterly like patterning out of the image. I suggest using one of the sharpening presets I’ve provided before, as I’ve designed the action based on using these first. Before you send it to Photoshop or run the action, you should set up sharpening in Lightroom first. I’ve posted instructions on how to do this here. You can turn this into a Lightroom Plug-in by saving the action as a droplet, and then setting up an external editor preset in Lightroom. What this will do is clean up the edges and then sharpen the image using my somewhat unorthodox sharpening method. For this method, the Action in my set (called “Thomas Set” - hey, keeping it simple!) that you want to use is called “Fuji Quick Fix”. Luckily, I’ve done all the hard work for you and I have a set of Photoshop actions that you can download at the end of this post. Doing this involves the use of find edges to make a mask, and then a combination of blurring and sharpening. The first solution is to sharpen the image in Lightroom to a reasonable amount and then once you’ve finished, send the image to Photoshop and clean up the edges. Solution 1 - Clean up the edges in Photoshop So what is the solution then? Well, I’ve come up with two approaches. I absolutely respect that opinion, so you don’t need to read any further! Of course the look of images can be a subjective matter, and some people have very strong feelings on the issue, so if you’re of the opinion that the files are perfect as they are, that’s great and you don’t need to do anything else. (I could be completely wrong mind you, but this is my best guess) I can only assume Adobe is using an aggressive demosaicing algorithm to avoid aliasing and moire issues caused by the x-trans sensor’s lack of anti-aliasing filter, and to compensate the sharpening is having to work overtime, leading to sharpening artefacts. Much softer than they are when you turn the sharpening off in other software. If you turn the sharpening off entirely in Lightroom, the images from X-Trans files are very soft. The problem seems to be Lightroom’s sharpening, or more specifically the interaction of the two. The problem doesn’t seem to be entirely down to the demosaicing algorithm. Since I wrote that originally, I’ve discovered something interesting. Here’s what I hope is clear example of this false detail effect that I’m talking about: Iridient Developer on the other hand (and some other third party developers) doesn’t have this issue. However, no matter what you do, you may be able to reduce how noticeable it is, but you can’t get rid of the false detail that Lightroom is creating. It seems to be exacerbated by Lightroom’s sharpening algorithms, and that’s why I spent quite a bit of time trying to come up with those sharpening settings to try and mitigate the problem. When this occurs repetitively on fine textures, you end up with mushy detail. It looks like an additional line around objects, almost like an embossing or an outlining effect. The problem is that Lightroom seems to generates false detail around high contrast edges. It’s especially noticeable in areas of trees or other foliage, or other repetitive textures. Here’s a snippet from my original post on the issue:ĭespite an earlier fix which addressed the demosaicing of X-Trans files, Lightroom still has problems with fine textural detail. The advantage of this is that you can get clean and natural looking results without having to learn a new piece of software, and by using the droplet as a plug-in approach I blogged about last week, you don’t even have to leave Lightroom.īefore I get into the solution, just as a recap, let me go back over what I believe the problem is. I’ve been working on this for a while now and I believe that by combining Lightroom and a little bit of Photoshop you can get close. Many of the comments I’ve received have been wondering if there’s a way to get close to the output of Iridient Developer or Photo Ninja using a combination of Lightroom and Photoshop. I’ve also offered some Lightroom sharpening presets that help mitigate the demosaicing issues a bit. ![]() In my ongoing quest to get the best from Fuji’s raw files, I’ve previously discussed the issue with Lightroom’s processing, some alternative ways of developing raw files using Iridient Developer and Photo Ninja. This is the long awaited final (for now) part of my series on Processing X-Trans files.

![]() For example, when keeping the score of the winning teams or counting items or days, people in the Western world and some other regions would often write four vertical lines, then cross them with a fifth horizontal line, and repeat the process. Different countries may use different types of representation for this. This system is also sometimes used in games and other simple calculations. When children learn to count, their teachers often use this system to help create a link between a concrete, easy-to-understand system, and a more abstract representation of numbers. These symbols are usually the same, therefore if 1 is represented with A, then 5 would be represented as AAAAA. The unary system represents each number with the same number of symbols as its value. Numbers in the Mayan culture had symbols for zero, one, and five, with special notation for numbers above nineteen. The Egyptian system was very similar, except that there were additional symbols for zero, one hundred, one thousand, ten thousand, one hundred thousand, and one million, as well as special notations for fractions. So for example 32 would be written (using the proper symbols) as CCCTT. Some cultures use simpler representations, like the Babylonian system, which has only two cuneiform symbols, for one (somewhat resembling the letter “T”) and for ten (slightly similar to the letter “C”). The rest of the numbers are represented as multiples or sums. The Hebrew number system uses the Hebrew alphabet to represent numbers from one to ten, multiples of ten, 100, 200, 300, and 400. For example, some Slavic people used the Cyrillic alphabet to represent numbers such as 1 to 9, multiples of 10, and multiples of 100, with special symbols for greater numbers, as well as symbols to differentiate the numerals from the letters. People in many geographic areas had systems of representing numbers, similar to the Roman or the Hindu-Arabic ones. In some cases, the subtraction rules are not used, and numerals are written in succession instead. The subtraction rule is not universal, it only works for these numbers: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, and CM. The order is important in the Roman system because a greater number followed by the smaller means that the two need to be added, but a smaller number in front of the larger one means that the smaller number is subtracted from the larger. Roman numerals are based on seven numbers written with the letters of the Latin alphabet: I They are still used today in some contexts, for example on clocks, to represent the hours. Roman numerals were used in the Roman Empire and Europe until the 14th century. It reads ANNO : DECIMO : EDWARDI : SEPTIMI : REGIS : VICTORIÆ : REGINÆ : CIVES : GRATISSIMI : MDCCCCX : (In the tenth year of King Edward VII, to Queen Victoria, from most grateful citizens, 1910). Curiously, numbers are represented by “digits,” the same word that is used to refer to fingers and toes in English and many other languages.Īn inscription in Latin and with Roman numerals on Admiralty Arch in London. ![]() Some cultures also used toes, spaces between fingers, and knuckles for counting. Even today people learning to count or who want to illustrate a point about counting in conversation often use fingers. Ten is a common number to use for counting because people have ten fingers, and body parts were often used for counting historically. It is a base-10 system, meaning that it is based on multiples of ten and that it uses ten symbols to represent all numbers. It was further modified and widely adopted around the world because of European trade and colonization. In the Middle Ages, it spread to the Western world through commerce, to replace the Roman numeral system. It was originally developed in India and improved by the Persian and Arab mathematicians. The Hindu-Arabic numeral system is one of the most widely used in the world today. The originally written representations of numbers through symbols evolved independently, but once trade across countries and continents became widespread, people learned and borrowed from each other and the number systems currently in use were created through collective knowledge. It is believed by some researchers that the concept of number was created independently in different regions. ![]() There are several ways of expressing numbers in numeric systems. Numbers have been used from ancient times, first in the form of tally marks - scratches on wood or bone, and then as more abstract systems. A number is an abstract mathematical concept representing a quantity. ![]() In the forest or cave scenario, it's a different situation, cause nature, unlike Hallways, is different everywhere you look. I guess the question comes down to, does it matter where they are if they're in a Hallway? Is the part of the Hallway they're in, any different from the Hallway a few feet away? 50 feet away, etc.? In the Hallway scenario, if you use something like you suggested (Outside Room 312), then your characters are obviously standing in place, cause if they move, run, etc., they're no longer outside Room 312. Most writers don’t realize how important sluglines are. But yeah, you’re right, the more full slugs, the better, and you can’t go wrong just having full slugs throughout. If the entire story takes place in one location, I would go ahead and use full slugs. ![]() If the main slug for the scene can be found on the same page, or within a few pages, I think it’s okay. I think partial slugs are okay (for interior shots) as long as they don’t go on too long. It may make the read quicker, and it may look more streamlined, but it doesn't take any extra lines to be exact and complete, and really doesn't add any difficulty to the read itself. Without them, when you pull up a scene report, you could easily have several "KITCHEN" or "HALLWAY" scenes that aren't actually the same place, meaning someone has to actually read the scene to make sure whch kitchen it is, and then make corrections to the printed scene report by hand. Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned in this regard, but, IMO, full slugs make for easier and clearer writing. Plus it's probably better not to sweat small stuff like this when writing features or generally more complex shorts.Ībbreviated slugs make sense, as Bert suggested. Probably not a big deal but it's always better to ask, I figure. HALLWAY WITH or simply WITH but I'm not sure if that's quite how it's done. Same goes for having two characters in separate stretches of hallway. Either way, it's somewhat disorienting to have some slugs have the building in them and others not to.įurther more, hallways in large buildings always seem to be an issue as there's always separate stretches of hallway but it seems awkward to have a slug like INT. HALLWAY? I ask because I'm not sure if it's an issue if your script actually gets produced and production schedules have to be drawn up. ![]() How do you approach having multiple locations with essentially the same slugline? For example, having hallways in different buildings? Do you have to name the building in each slugline or is it fine to just stick with INT. An example of this would be: Script Snippet - Secondary Location Slugline Example INT.I never realized how irritating this is until just recently. You'll often see subheadings used when characters move to another room in a house. When moving to a secondary location within a master location This secondary heading might note a change in location within a larger single location. Once the master heading is established, a writer might use a subheading or secondary scene heading to alert the reader to specific details with the master scene heading without creating a separate scene. As for the time of day, you can be as specific as is relevant to the story, so feel free to use day, night, dawn, dusk, morning, afternoon, etc. Be straightforward in your labeling of the location, don't offer up unnecessary details. This type of heading starts the scene and alerts the reader to whether it's indoors (INT.) or outdoors (EXT.), the primary location, and the time of day. Master Heading in a ScriptĪ master heading is the predominant job of the slug line. They usually operate in one of two ways, as a master heading or as a subheading. Slug lines are all uppercase letters and best when left brief. ![]() ![]() In 1974 he joined his best friend Harry Nilsson in The Son of Dracula, narrated Harry’s animated film The Point and appeared in Frank Zappa’s 200 Motels. ![]() In 1970 the documentary Let It Be was released, and in 1971 Ringo starred in Blindman. Sure, they’re old and not as nimble on stage and haven’t smashed any guitars in a long time, but Townshend can still wheel up a nice windmill or two and Daltrey can still shout “eeeYeahhh” louder and longer than most. Tommy’s narrative of abuse could be taken from the headlines and Quadrophenia’s tales of teen angst and conflict never get old. And although The Who is best known for music released in the last century, these songs are undoubtedly still relevant. Some random thoughts … as “My Generation” ages, many classic rock artists struggle to maintain relevance. It was the eve of Pete Townshend’s birthday, so 15,000+ joined in for a rousing version of “Happy Birthday to You!” The night ended with a spirited sing-a-long.
